A Good Vampire?

Monday, August 10, 2009
There are continuing comments about Twilight and whether similar stories such as The Vampire Diaries are really just harmless entertainment. I believe that the Twilight expose by Dr. Scott Johnson does a thorough job of reviewing this.

However, I am posting a comment we received and my response on this topic as I feel it addresses in short the heart of this matter: Can there be a "good" vampire?

Anonymous Comment:

I am 65 years old, a born-again Christian (for 40 years) and grandmother of four grandchildren (15 yrs, 13 yrs, 12 yrs and 9 yrs). My oldest son is a pastor and a Chaplan in the Army National Guard.

I LOVE Twilight's Edward and his character. I see him as good, kind and protective. I see him as wanting to be good regardless of the curse upon him. He did choose to love over destroying. He constantly made that decision.

As the Bible says, and I am paraphrasing, 'to him who thinks something is sin, to him it is sin.' In another verse the Bible also says, "Who are you to judge another's servant. To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand for God is able to make him stand." The first scripture is for all of us Christians as well as the second.

We spend too much time judging one another and not enought time praying for one another. Jesus said 'you ought always to pray and never to faint.'

Stop picking on Stephanie Meyer and what she believes or does. Pray for her. That is how you and I can help her. God is able to change her and make her stand. Likewise, God is able to make any one of us stand who is caught up in something He does not wish us to be involved in.
Our Response:

What matters is not how you or I see Twilight, but how GOD sees it.

EDWARD:

  • Is the un-dead, drawing life from a source that is NOT of God. (Matthew 22:32; Mark 12:27; Luke 20:38)
  • Is a creature of darkness, representing the antithesis of that which is of God (I John 1:5; I Peter 2:9; I Thessalonians 5:5).
  • Lives in a "coven", which is an assembly of witches. God states that He will not suffer a witch to live (Exodus 22:18; Micah 5:12; Leviticus 19:26).
  • Is a vampire, sustaining on that which God tells His people to abstain from ingesting: blood (Deuteronomy 12:23; Leviticus 19:26; Acts 15:20, 29). Edward can ONLY live by doing what God forbids. His mere existence requires that he rebel against God.
  • Is clairvoyant, engaging in occult practices, which God calls an abomination. (Deuteronomy 8:10-11)
  • Is a deceiver, for although he claims to be "good" (eating only animals), he is constantly battling urges to eat and kill Bella (his natural urges proving that he is not what he claims).
  • Encourages abortion, which is the taking of innocent life (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17; Jeremiah 2:34; James 2:11).
  • Has obtained an "eternal life" that comes from something other than faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Is the work of a woman who is involved in a religious delusion and says she was inspired by spiritual visitations and a fascination with death & suicide.
  • Is promoted using an analogy that "forbidden fruit" is good, glorifying Satan's temptation and the fall of man.
Considering these things, how can we see Edward as "good". More importantly, is that God's view? Is it possible for that which God calls evil to still be "good"?

"Destruction is certain for those who say that evil is good and good is evil; that dark is light and light is dark; that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter." Isaiah 5:20

"A good tree CANNOT bring forth evil fruit, NEITHER can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit." Matthew 7:18

You "LOVE" a character of darkness who promotes rebellion against God's commands and whose very existence requires one to embrace those things which God holds as detestable. And you want us to believe that this is acceptable because "sin isn't sin if we don't think it is" and no one can judge? Why would God need to "change" Stephanie Meyer if she is not in error?

"Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, rebuke and expose them." Ephesians 5:11

"So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth." I John 1:6

"Dear friend, don't let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God's children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God." 3 John 1:11
